A PROPERLY INSTALLED ROUTER GIVES YOU BETTER CONNECTION AND BETTER SECURITY!

FIRST, SOME BASIC INFORMATION!

A so-called "Router" is actually a "Broadband Splitter".. It shares your internet connection to one or more computers, smart TVs, mobile phones, tablets, Smart speakers, etc.

Since you only have ONE internet socket, the router makes sure to distribute this socket to all your connected devices. Via Wi-Fi or via cable, so that all these devices can use the internet at the same time, completely independently of each other!

Our guide will show you the steps included when you select: MANUAL- installation of the router,
Click MANUAL
(Feel free to get help from the user manual for your router)

THE 1:ST STEP IS USUALLY TO ENTER YOUR OWN PASSWORD TO THE ROUTER LOGIN! We recommend that you use the WinGuiden method to create a more secure password for your router.

The WinGuider-method involves inventing a SENTENCE OF AT LEAST 8 WORDS, then you type each word's 1st character as a password!

Once you have done this, select Next... If you are logged out of the router, log in with the new password
(Feel free to start OneNote in your computer and enter the router's password in there)

STEP 2: USUALLY CONSISTS OF SPECIFYING WHICH MODE THE ROUTER SHOULD WORK IN (Router or Access point) Here you of course choose WIFI ROUTER / WIRELESS ROUTER or equivalent. Select Next

STEP 3: USUALLY ASKS: WHAT KIND OF INTERNET CONNECTION YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER PROVIDES. The most common thing today is that it is done without a login or password , etc. Usually you should specify: DHCP = AUTOMATIC IP

(This means that your router will automatically retrieve both its IP-address and DNS address from your internet provider) (If your ISP requires otherwise, then you follow their directives given to you!)

STEP 4: NOW YOU USUALLY HAVE TO ENTER THE NETWORK NAME (SSID) YOU WANT TO CALL YOUR PRIVATE WI-FI
NOTE!  One for 2.4Ghz, One for 5Ghz, Older devices usually only "see" the 2.4Ghz network, while newer devices "see" both the 2.4Ghz as well as the 5Ghz networks.

Now choose a personal name for your network, this is the network name your computers etc. should connect to to access the Internet.
NB! THAT EVERYONE AROUND YOU CAN "SEE" THIS NETWORK NAME!  Therefore, choose a "unique" network name, so you avoid confusion! DO NOT use the pre-installed name.

Most often, the networks get an addition with "_2G" and e.g. "_5G" to point out which network is 2.4Ghz and which is the 5Ghz network.

Feel free to create the WiFi network password using the WinGuider-method. This provides SIGNIFICANTLY better security and at the same time it becomes easier for you to both remember & enter the passwords!

It is usually possible to use the same password for the 2.4ghz network as for the 5Ghz network as long as the guest network has a completely separate password!

Choose to encrypt the login with:
WPA2-PERSONAL AES (or equivalent) to increase security. Then select "Apply" or equivalent, and choose to FINISH.

If you connected to your router's admin interface via WI-FI,
then you must re-connect your computer, but this time connect to the router's NEW network (the ones you just entered above) with the new password!

Select the icon: Network on the taskbar, click ONLY on your router's NEW Wi-Fi network name.

Enter the network password, then select Connect. Wait until it is indicated: CONNECTED!

STEP 5: NOW IT'S TIME TO CREATE A GUEST NETWORK!

NOW CLICK ON THE "BUTTON" OF THE ROUTER TO SET UP GUEST NETWORKS

It may look like the one in the photo below:

Since all routers has 2 sides! An internet side and an inside, atleast the cable that supplies you with the Internet must be connected RIGHT. To the router's INTERNET/WAN connector..

This plug usually sits by itself and always has a different color just so that no one can miss this socket. (In the photo above, it is the blue connector, which is clearly different from the orange ones on the right side)

PREPARATION: First, make sure to first keep an eye on the correct connectors in BOTH the fiber converter/modem and the router's Internet/WAN connector.  This is the basis for the router to work, regardless of whether you intend to connect computers, etc. via cable or only via WI-FI or a mixture thereof.

I assume that you have both opened the packaging of the router to see what the back of your router looks like and learned to identify the connections and connectors that are there. (Use your manual for the router for more information)..

PLACEMENT: Actually, it should be included to place the router in the best way. Most instructions usually state that a central place in the dwelling at about one to one and a half meters height from the floor measured is best, but this can work in a single-storey dwelling, two-storey housing may require different placement. But usually you start by putting the router near the place where the internet "enters" the house (at the modem / fiber converter) and starts from there. Then you move the router only when some place often turns out to get bad wifi.

Here you choose how you do with the placement of your router, depending on whether you have a sufficiently long network cable between the fiber box / modem and the place you want to set your router on.

NOTE! THE FEW CABLES THAT NEED TO BE PLUGGED IN, MUST HOWEVER, BE CONNECTED CORRECTLY! In fact, it is not uncommon for people to connect these cables incorrectly.. That's why we're starting there...

All routers have a back similar to the one in the photo below.
They have a connection for POWER (black in the below picture), A button to turn the router on and off (silver gray), an input for the cable with "internet" that comes from your modem / fiber converter (blue in the below picture), In addition, there are a number of LAN sockets where computers that connect via network cable are connected (orange in the below picture). If you only have WI-FI connected devices, no LAN sockets are used.

WHEN YOU HAVE UNPACKED THE ROUTER, IT IS TIME TO CONNECT,  PLACE AND INSTALL THE ROUTER SO THAT YOU MAY ACCESS YOUR INTERNET!

Installation takes place in 9 stages:

  1. CONNECTION OF THE ROUTER (If you have already used the router, you have probably already done this)
  1. CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER TO THE ROUTER
  2. LOG IN TO ROUTER THROUGH THE BROWSER
  3. SELECT DHCP, etc. AS THE TYPE OF CONNECTION TO THE ISP
  4. CREATE A PERSONAL WI-FI NETWORK
  5. CREATE A GUEST NETWORK & UPDATE THE SOFTWARE IN THE ROUTER
  6. CONNECT YOUR COMPUTERS ETC. TO YOUR PRIVATE NETWORK!
  7. CONNECT YOUR MORE INSECURE DEVICES TO YOUR GUEST NETWORK!
  8. HOW TO GIVE A DEVICE (E.G. THE PRINTER) A FIXED IP ADDRESS

(NOTE! If you have a router that has been used before, then perform a RESET according to. Router's manual!)

1: PLUGGING IN THE ROUTER
IF no other network cable is present, then most likely it came with a network cable in the package. Connect the network cable you have to the modem / fiber converter, then connect the other end of the network cable to your router's INTERNET/WAN connector (as shown above).  Next, connect the router's power supply according to the router's manual.

Place the router on a stable surface and turn on the power to the router. . (Lights come on and flash and have themselves)

(If you wish, connect your computer via cable to your router's LAN socket on the back of the router. In that case, you connect network cable no: 2 to one of the tightly grouped network connectors (LAN) on the back of the router and the other end to your computer's network socket) However, we will show you how to connect to your router via Wi-Fi

2: CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER TO THE ROUTER
NOTE! If you connect your computer to the router via network cable, you jump to the green crossed out texts below.

If you connect wirelessly via WIFI, start and log in to your computer. Select the  icon: Network on the taskbar.  In the image below, the left icon = wired computer, the right icon is displayed for computers connecting via WI-FI. (The icon that appears depends on the status of the current connection. If you don't see any of the network icons shown in the below image, then click the up arrow next  to the clock to see if they appear there.)

Click ONLY on your router's Wi-Fi network (In the manual, enter the initial network name and

password of the router) Then select Connect. Wait until it is indicated: CONNECTED!

When setting up a router, IF such a question appears, you should choose to make the computer discoverable by other computers and devices on the network. Even those of you who have connected your computer to the router with a network cable follow the instructions below.

When the network is indicated to be connected, then click on the magnifying glass at the bottom. Type: CMD, Press Enter,
In the black box with white text that pops up (command prompt) type:
ipconfig and hit enter.

Now look at the line: Default Gateway, IF computer is connected correctly, then there is always indicated an ip address type: 192.168.X.X

Launch the EDGE browser. Type in the ENTIRE ip-address  (192.168.X.X) in the address bar at the top of the browser. Press enter, NOW YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR ROUTER'S 1ST PAGE IN YOUR BROWSER! Usually you will be taken directly to a start page where you must enter a password The password is sometimes found on the bottom of your router or in the accompanying manual

NOTE! FROM NOW ON, WHAT APPEARS IN YOUR ROUTER MIGHT DIFFER DEPENDING ON THE BRAND AND WHICH MODEL!
THESE STEPS ARE RELATIVELY SIMILAR SO YOU CAN STILL GET HELP FROM THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR WI-FI ROUTER!

It may also look like this, but it differs from router to router, please read in your router's manual how yours work.

And it's actually as simple as it looks, a: you  enable guest WI-FI, b:  you type in a resourceful network name (type: Neighbor's wifi, World-Wide-Web etc.  ) and as usual, you should use the WinGuiden method to create a more secure password to your guest network.

If your router has BOTH a 2.4Ghz guest network and a 5Ghz guest network, name them the same name, but give e.g. the 2.4Ghz network an extension with _2 after the network name. Your guests and your smart TVs, Smart Speakers etc. May not all have support for 5Ghz networks whereby they will only see your_2 network...

Save the setting...

Step 6: UPDATE YOUR ROUTER'S FIRMWARE (inner software)

This is a very important step then possibly. Vulnerabilities and possibly Bugs (errors in the software) can be fixed!

Here, too, it differs from router to router what it looks like, read your router's manual for more information.

Here, too, the interface leads you forward, the 1st thing you should do is to see if updates can be downloaded & installed automatically, as it is shown circled in the image above.
Follow the on-screen instructions when the update is in progress and when it's finished. Then you usually have to restart the router, whereby it can take a couple to 3-4 minutes before your networks appear again.

CONGRATULATIONS! NOW THE INSTALLATION OF YOUR ROUTER IS COMPLETE!

Now it is time, IF POSSIBLE, to save this configuration as a file to the hard drive, so that you can easily "reset" your router eg.  After major update that requires a "reset" of the router.

Step 7: TIME TO CONNECT YOUR DEVICES TO YOUR PRIVATE WI-FI NETWORK!

Then it's time to start connecting your computers and private mobiles to your private WIFI by choosing the right Wi-Fi network name & type the correct Wifi password when you connect.

NB! These will be the only devices that can log in to the Router Administration Interface!

NOW YOU HAVE A PROPERLY INSTALLED ROUTER WITH BETTER SECURITY WHILE PROTECTING YOUR COMPUTERS, TABLETS, LAPTOPS, MOBILES, ETC. BY HAVING SEPARATED THESE FROM YOUR MORE INSECURE DEVICES SUCH AS, YOUR GUESTS' DEVICES, YOUR SMART TVS & SMART SPEAKERS, ETC.

Step 8 (LAST STEP!): CONNECT YOUR MORE INSECURE DEVICES TO THE GUEST NETWORK!
Only when Step: 7 is done is done, THEN you start connecting your Smart TVs, Smart-speakers, frequent guests' mobile phones, your older tablets etc. to your guest network by selecting your guest-network-network name & entering the GUEST-networks Wifi password on each device.
These devices will NOT be able to log in to e.g.  the router's administration interface, they can also not access your computers or your computers' Shared Files, etc.

THIS IS HOW YOU GIVE A CONNECTED DEVICE A "FIXED IP-ADDRESS"

Many people think that you need to enter the fixed IP address directly into the printer or into  the computer..  But that's wrong!
If you do, sooner than later, it will collide with the router's settings.  After all, the router does not understand that the device wants to keep its ip address!  After all, it doesn't even ask the router for an ip address!

TO GIVE A COMPUTER/PRINTER A FIXED IP ADDRESS, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

This is actually much simpler than many people think!

In short, the router need to be told to always give out the same IP address to the chosen device!
Here you use the router's DHCP server (the one who "lends" IP addresses to the devices connects  to the router)

For example, in  Asus routers, go to LAN-SETTINGS, select tab: DHCP SERVER, and enable: ENABLE MANUAL ASSIGNMENT to associate a specific IP address with a device's MAC address (e.g. A printer).

In other routers, for example, go  to "more settings" etc. and select Network Settings and LAN, where you can find "Static IP address bind list" etc.  How it´s done in your particular router is stated in its user-manual.

But the basis is the same no matter which router of any model you own!

Your computer/printer/tablet or whatever they are should still use AUTOMATIC IP ADDRESS & AUTOMATIC DNS. It is then your router's "job" to always assign the SAME device the SAME ip address.

FEEL FREE TO GIVE YOUR NETWORK PRINTER A FIXED IP ADDRESS IN THIS WAY!
This is because
many printers store  the IP address that the printer  had just when the software / driver was installed or when the printer was connected to the computer. If the printer then gets a different IP address, e.g.  after being turned off for a long time, your computer will not "see" or access the printer.

For this reason, it is usually best to give a network-connected printer a fixed IP address via the router right from  the start. The printer still specifies the DHCP-assigned IP address, so that the router can always give the printer the same IP address.

AND NOTE! A NETWORKED PRINTER (e.g. One that connects via WI-FI) SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONNECTED TO YOUR PRIVATE NETWORK!  Despite the fact that networked printers are considered "insecure" due to few updates, the printer MUST be connected to the private network for printing to take place!

If you take this information to heart and follow the above instructions, you have secured your network, which reduces the risk of intrusion via your older, insecure devices!

The guests who connect to your guest network can then not harm your computers, etc.  regardless of whether their computers, etc.  have been infected by viruses, trojans or network worms.
If possible "Hackers" may take over  your Smart-tv, smart speakers, etc., But when you performed the above, these usually cannot reach your private computers, etc.

SURE, IT WILL TAKE A FEW EXTRA MINUTES, BUT IT'S WORTH FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE!
The easiest thing is if you download the user manual to your router and "dry swim" your way through this guide first. Then it will be both faster and easier for you to do what you are supposed to, as you should!

You can already then come up with suitable, resourceful network names for both your
Private WI-FI network and for your Guest Network!

FAST, STABLE and SAFE IS WinGuide's motto!

All routers consist of 2 logical BASIC parts, ONE is INTERNET (also called WAN) THE OTHER is your local network (also called LAN). Between these 2 sits a Firewall. The router's firewall has features to prevent others on the internet from seeing or accessing your computers, while also having features that allow all your LAN-connected computers to access the Internet via cable or wirelessly via WI-FI!

The 3rd part is an addendum, On the router's LAN side it is possible to create a GUEST network, This is a completely separate WI-FI network that provides its very own highway "alongside" your own private network!  The devices connected via the guest network cannot, for security reasons, "see" or access your private computers. (Therefore, devices with poorer security should only connect to the guest network, to protect your computers from being attacked via these more insecure devices)

SINCE IT IS BEST & SAFEST TO DO SO, WE ASSUME THAT YOU CHOOSE TO ACTIVATE A GUEST NETWORK, AND CONNECT YOUR MORE VULNERABLE COMPUTER DEVICES (SUCH AS YOUR SMART TVs, Apple TV, SMART SPEAKERS, GOOGLE HOME DEVICES, etc.) TO THE GUEST NETWORK ONLY. IF ANY OF THESE MORE VULNERABLE DEVICES ARE CONNECTED TO YOUR PRIVATE LAN, THESE CAN EASILY BE USED TO ATTACK YOUR COMPUTERS.
NOTE! WHEN YOU HAVE GUESTS AT HOME, THEY SHOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED TO CONNECT TO YOUR GUEST NETWORK. THIS ALLOWS THE GUESTS TO SAVE ON THEIR MOBILE DATA, AND TO KEEP YOUR COMPUTERS PROTECTED!
