TIPS n ADVICE REGARDING WINDOWS

All you need is access to a computer with internet and a USB stick of at least 8Gb!

NOTE! ALL DATA ON THE USB STICK WILL BE DELETED!

Let's start at the beginning! If you have a computer  with an empty hard drive, maybe you have put a newly purchased hard drive in your old computer, or you just want to install Windows 10/11!

Here's how to do it!

For starters, you'll need a USB stick á at least 8GB. (See examples here).

Licenses you can buy on the Internet (Choose win10 HOME or PRO), If your computer already has a valid license, this will be used, so you do not need to  buy a new license!

When you have the USB stick, plug it into your computer (preferably socket with blue flap if available):

TO GET WINDOWS 11: Click this link: Microsoft website for Windows 11
Scroll down to: "
Create Windows 11 installation media", select: Download the tool now

TO GET WINDOWS 10: Click this link: Microsoft website for Windows 10

Scroll down to: "Do you want to install Windows 10 on your PC?" , Select: Download the tool now

(Whether you intend to install Windows 10 or 11, you then continue FROM HERE:)

Save the file to your computer's SHARED DOWNLOADED FILES folder (C:\users\shared\Shared Downloads), Now log in with an ADMINISTRATOR account on your computer (NOTE! The Media Creation Tool only works when you are logged in with an administrator account).

Start Windows Explorer, in the address line above: type: Public% Press Enter!, Now all the SHARED FOLDERS of the computer will appear, double-click: SHARED DOWNLOADS,

There you will now find the file: MEDIA CREATION TOOL

Double click on it, accept UAC. Read & Accept the license,
then select
: Create installation media for another computer, Select: Windows XX (and 64-bit if you opted for Windows 10).

Select YOUR USB stick, then select:Create Media, wait for it to finish, select: Finish

Now you have a USB stick ready for your upcoming installation of Windows XX.

NB! For best results, you should purchase one of WinGuider's ANSWER-FILES AND GUIDE and extract the attached answer-files to your USB-stick in accordance with the instructions in the section: PREPARATION

Then you simply connect your newly created USB stick to the turned off computer to be installed you power on the computer, select the CORRECT FUNCTION KEY by dabbing repeatedly on it, so that you enter to: bootmenu

This allows you to opt to temporarily  boot  (start) your computer from your USB stick ..
If you have purchased an installation instruction, this help, and more, is available in the PDF file together with instructions on how to proceed hereafter in order to install Windows in the BEST AND SAFEST WAY!

PROTECTING YOURSELF WITH SECURE PASSWORDS IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK! ONE BAD PASSWORD CAN DESTROY JUST ABOUT ALL YOUR SECURITY

Passwords are much more important than most people think.. As shown in: The list of the most commonly used passwords!

As everyone understands, ALL passwords in the link above, are far too easy to guess, Easy-to-guess passwords are the MAIN reason why different accounts/apps get "Hacked".. (Actually, they never get "HACKED", The hackers have only guessed/tested themselves to a working password)

The easiest way to avoid being subjected to this type of "hacking", is to use the popular WINGUIDER-METHOD to create more secure, accurate passwords that are at the same time easy to remember and easy to enter.

The WinGuider method is that you come up with a sentence of at least 8 words, and then you enter the 1st character in each word as the password.

The password sentence: "My cat Mjau has black and white fur" will form the much more secure password: McMhbawf or McMhb&wf (depending on HOW you choose to enter it!). This is a far more secure passwords than using one's partner's, children's, pet's, etc.'s name, date of birth, etc. which too many people use as passwords. OBSERVE! That even if you use a PIN code or face reading to your computer, your password is in the background, If you use a Microsoft account to log in to the computer, anyone who has guessed your password, can log in to this account via a web browser, from anywhere in the world. So surely it is important to use a password that is NOT easy to "hack"!

If you have the habit of always using the SAME E-mail account or the SAME password for your social media-accounts and other internet-based services, then you run an EXTRA HIGH RISK OF LOSING CONTROL OF THE DATA CONTAINED IN THESE!

Therefore, always use the WinGuider method to create new more secure passwords for each of your accounts! (Hint! If you have verified your account in your computer, then you can SEE all the passwords you have used for websites, etc. in EDGE "three dots in the upper right corner" and profiles and passwords.

The WinGuider method is so easy to use that you can easily teach it to both children and the elderly. And everyone in between. If you use it, this will greatly reduce the risk of your accounts being "hacked" or hijacked!

USE THE WINGUIDER-METHOD TO EASILY CREATE MORE SECURE PASSWORDS THAT ARE

EASY TO REMEMBER & EASY TO ENTER

HOW TO EASILY PROTECT YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS FROM BEING HIJACKED OR HACKED!

This is done by simply entering your gmail/apple account as security for your Microsoft account's password changes! And vice versa!

If someone manages to log in to your account, all attempts to: change the password (by the use of "forgot password") or to change e-mail accounts, etc., the question of whether these activities should be allowed or not will always be sent to your other e-mail account.

And since unauthorized persons are unlikely to  have access to BOTH of these email accounts, the "hacker attack" will fail. However, you will always receive a notification that someone else is trying to change your password, so you can act upon it yourself.

Start by launching EDGE and  browsing to: https://account.microsoft.com/ and log in by entering your password

Scroll down to: SECURITY, Select: Security dashboard, enter your password/PIN, etc.

Select: Advanced security options, select: Send a code via email, Enter the email address of your gmail/apple account,

If you wish, you can enter: Text a code and  your mobile's phone number, Now you have protected the password to your MS account!

Now repeat the same procedure at gmail/apple to enter your Microsoft email account as security.

- When you are done, these accounts are used as collateral for each other. For example, if you click on the function "forgot password", you can approve the password change yourself via the email sent to your other e-mail account.

- Now close Edge via its top right "X".

WITH THIS METHOD, WHICH IS BUILT INTO WINDOWS, YOU CAN EASILY AND SAFELY SHARE FILES WITH:

1: OTHER USERS OF THE SAME COMPUTER OR 2: OTHER COMPUTERS ON YOUR HOME NETWORK!

THE BUILT-IN FEATURE OF WINDOWS: SHARED FOLDERS IS AN OFTEN FORGOTTEN FEATURE

This article will try to give you a picture of what they can be used for and show how easy it is to use these folders.

Windows' built-in "Public Folders" can easily be used to share files with other users on the same computer, or with other computers on the same local network. As these folders are SEPARATED from your own user folders, your private files remain private!

SO WHERE CAN I FIND THESE FOLDERS?

If you start Windows Explorer, and scroll to "C:\Users\Shared" you will see all these folders.

(All computer users can access ALL of these folders by browsing their way to the folders.

But also users on other computers can connect to these folders.. (So you do not have to email, run with USB-sticks, etc. to share files)

The Mapps initially do not contain any files, so users have to copy the desired files to the respective Folder.

And YES! If necessary, you can create new folders in the folders that already exist.

All right! THE FOLDERS ARE IN MY COMPUTER, BUT HOW DO I MAKE SURE OTHER COMPUTERS CAN ACCESS THEM?

Access to these folders over the network is normally disabled, so any computer, which is to share folders must enable access to these manually.

Here's how it works:

1: Open the control panel, select: Network and Internet, Select: Network and Sharing Center, and: Otheradvanced sharing settings,

2: Under "Private (current profile)", check: "Enable network discovery" as well as "Enable automatic configuration of..", As well as check that "Enable file and printer sharing" is checked,

3: Next, click on the "Arrow DOWN icon" at: ALL NETWORKS. Check: Enable sharing so that anyone with network access can read..., So check "protect file sharing connections." With 128bit encryption.. " is enabled.. (For stronger protection),

4: Under "Password protected sharing" you SHOULD choose: "disable password-protected sharing", each user who has a computer connected to your local network thus gets access to your shared folders.

Since everyone who accesses your home network can also access your shared folders, you should give your guests a GUEST NETWORK to use. You activate a guest network (and give it a separate password) in your Router (see its manual for instructions)

Observe! It is very important that you check 2 things in your router's settings:

-Check that A(ccess)P(oint) isolation is NOT enabled (if it is enabled then no computer can "see" any other computer or even a shared printer) Please refer to your router's manual for more help...

Enable GUEST NETWORK, so all your visitors can access the internet but without accessing your private shared files. (A guest network runs in its own "channel" completely alongside your private home network.. Guests will then not be able to access your shared folders)

Once you've done this, you don't have to run around with USB sticks, send files via email or share any OneDrive folders. You can find and download them faster and MORE SECURELY directly from the sharing computer's SHARED folders!

THIS IS HOW EASY IT IS TO SHARE FILES ON YOUR HOME NETWORK!

HOW IS IT REALLY USED! HOW BIG SHOULD IT BE? AND SHOULD IT EVER BE DISABLED?

As an experienced, well-trained WINDOWS TECHNICIAN, one is regularly appalled by all the lousy tweaking/optimization advice that abounds on the internet, and the advice on disabling the Windows page-file is one of the most common outright incorrect "optimizations" that inexperienced people diligently spread.

Let's examine some of the most common myths surrounding the swap file (also called Pagefile) and uncover them once and for all. (NOTE! The Swapfile is the same thing fixed for Windows UWP APPS, The PAGE-file Used to be called swap-file before, but that has now been changed to PAGE-file)

How is Windows paging file used, anyway?

Simply put, ALL operating systems (including Windows) use a paging file to be able to free up occupied RAM by transferring things in memory that are no longer ACTIVELY used to a TEMPORARY STORAGE LOCATION, And since the data is not used, it does not matter that the storage location (hard drive) is a little more slow compared to the RAM. The data to the paging file is also moved in SMALL portions of type 4Kb at a time, so most of it still ends up only in the hard drive's CACHE from where it is later written to the hard disk itself.

Simply explained: If you work with 6 different word documents and you use maybe one or two of these diligently. Then the other 4 word processes are inactive (because you do not use (write or read) these documents). So out of these 6 open documents, 4 of these (inactive) documents and their associated word processes) only lock a bunch of RAM to absolutely no avail..

THIS IS WHERE THE WINDOWS MEMORY MANAGER STEPS INTO THE PICTURE..  Its task is to keep track of all memory (physical memory (=RAM) as virtual (RAM, paging file & temp files together) and ensure that ALL this memory is used as efficiently as possible..

And in the situation above, with many inactive word processes & documents open, then the memory manager chooses to move the currently inactive data (according to special rules) AWAY from the RAM to the paging file.. (Which, initially, usually ends up in the disk cache)

THE PAGING FILE ALLOWS THE COMPUTER TO FREE UP RAM FOR OTHER THINGS! (As if you decide to start a new program, for example) Thus, the Paging File helps to INCREASE computer performance!

Now if the paging file had instead been disabled, then the computer would soon run out of physical (RAM) memory (thanks to the fact that lots of inactive data still remains in the RAM, and since it no longer is possible to move the inactive data away as there is nowhere to move it) then a whole bunch of different problems would have arisen (Among other things you will see error messages that there "is not enough memory" be displayed, programs will start crashing, etc.) Although in practice, Windows would have tried to save itself by creating a paging file anyway, this process would however takes up a whole bunch of processing power, and thus the computer's performance had been lowered EVEN MORE!, The "no paging file" setting really only means that WINDOWS should not CREATE a paging file when Windows boots up! However, Windows CAN create one when Windows is up and running!

So the fact that INACTIVE data can be temporarily moved to the paging file, DOES NOT AFFECT PERFORMANCE NEGATIVELY AT ALL, rather the opposite.. So YES! The paging file must be enabled and used, and it must be of an adequate size..

The unique help files included in WinGuider GUIDES automatically ensure that each installed computer receives a fixed paging file of 6Gb. (Where both initial & maximum size = 6144Mb)

This is usually more than enough for private use! But can be expanded if needed!

And NO! Windows does NOT fill up the paging file, just because it exists.

The only thing this setting does is ensure that there will always be free space in the paging file once any data needs to be written to it.

And sure! This setting reduces the free space of the hard disk by 6Gb. But it is very rarely a problem..

NOTE! The paging file's default setting, with a very small initial paging file that Windows later CAN expand in size once the need arises, has several drawbacks. The main disadvantage is that it actually takes a lot of processing power to expand the size of an existing paging file, which is usually unfortunate since the computer is usually at its most loaded, precisely at those moments when more paging file is needed.  (A bit of a catch22)

-However, having a FIXED PAGING FILE instead (where the intitial size and maximum size are the same) as WinGuider automatically gives you, only gives advantages. The computer will always have enough free space in the paging file, when needed, without having to waste any processing power at all, as the free space in the paging file is already there...   Compare this against the cost of getting a few Gb less to programs, etc.. In most cases, this is a pure performance gain for every computer.

NOW LET'S LOOK AT A COUPLE OF COMMON MYTHS ABOUT THE PAGING FILE:

1: "THE COMPUTER HAS SO MUCH RAM THAT YOU CAN DISABLE THE PAGING FILE"

Already here, there is a total lack of knowledge displayed about how computers work..  (This is often put forward by the same people who claim that it is OK to always log in as an Administrator and/or claim that antivirus is not needed since you get by with "common sense" etc.)

In fact, no matter how much memory a computer has, any computer system is built to use a paging file for performance reasons.

The claim seems to stem from an imaginary that the paging file would be something negative, something that burdens the computer.  Based on the explanation above, you should now understand that only currently INACTIVE data is temporarily transferred to the paging file. After all, this actually frees up MORE RAM for the processes that needs RAM! How can this be bad?

The big problem with disabling the paging file is that once ALL your available RAM is filled, then your programs will start crashing, then there is no virtual memory for Windows to allocate - and worst case, the entire Windows system crashes, or it becomes unstable.

And if it's a program that crashes, then it goes down hard - there's then no time to save your work or do anything else, think of the Word documents above. This would cause the loss of all that data that you have not yet saved. This is just a bad option!

MYTH NO:1 IS THUS OUTRIGHT FALSE, AND WILL ONLY HARM THE PERFORMANCE OF THE COMPUTER!

MYTH NO. 2: "THE PAGING FILE SHOULD BE AT LEAST 1.5 TIMES THE PHYSICAL RAM"

This claim was true in the early PC-Stone Age, when drivers often malfunctioned, crashing servers and computers. So in order to solve the problem (and avoid the same serious error occurring again) YOU HAD TO HAVE A FULL MEMORY DUMP (I.E. THE ENTIRE RAM + a little more, this "little extra" is to made sure that the computer system will work helpfully during the crash's DUMP process).

Therefore, at that time (early PC-Stone Age) it was considered that the paging file should be at least 1.5 times the RAM. (the amount of RAM ang 50% more)

But today, when a full memory dump is rarely a requirement, and certainly not at all in privately owned computers, there simply is no longer any REASON whatsoever for this "minimum requirement".. This rule has long since lost its function. In addition, it is illogical that the more RAM you put in your computer would require it to have an even larger paging file.

Today, ALL CORRECT drivers are certified for Windows and very rarely cause similar problems. Therefore, no one needs to have a full memory dump anymore, whereupon the size of the paging file no longer really has any connection to the amount of RAM! Observe! WinGuider's unique help files automatically changes the memory dump from a full memory dump to a minimal memory dump of 256Kb that doesn't eat up free space on your hard drive. This, together with the fixed paging file of 6Gb, is just fine in 98% of cases.

MYTH NO:2 IS THEREFORE NO LONGER RELEVANT! = A PURE MISUNDERSTANDING!

Myth No. 3: "THE PAGING FILE SHOULD BE PLACED ON ANOTHER HARD DRIVE"

This myth is based on the fact that, if you have an extra PHYSICAL hard drive in your computer, then you reduce the load on the hard drive that Windows is installed to. And earlier, in the early PC-STONE AGE, when IDE-hard drives were used they were slow with low read and write speed, THEN there was some truth in this, That when you moved the largest paging file to another, less used, hard drive THEN you could reduce the load on the Windows disk somewhat, but NOTE! Even then, you always had to have AT LEAST one small page-file of a few hundred Mb left on C: because, among other things, Windows eventlog management REQUIRES this.

In reality, windows actually doesn't WRITE that much to the paging file at all, BUT.. Even today, you still need to have a small pagefile on c:

And today, everyone has such fast hard drives, which also have a very large CACHE that it doesn't matter performance-wise anymore. Much thanks to the fact that the data written to the paging file is often written in such small portions that all this is usually handled by the hard disk cache, so today it makes less sense to move the main part of the paging file to the hard disk No:2.for performance reasons.

MYTH NO:3 IS TODAY ONLY PARTIALLY TRUE! If you have a small "C:\" so CAN you move part of the paging file to "D:\"!

SO! BACK TO THE QUESTION OF: WHEN SHOULD THE PAGEFILE BE DISABLED!
THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION: IS:
NEVER EVER!

In a regular installation of Windows, you can switch to a FIXED paging file (=enter the same initial value as the maximum value) while in a computer installed with WinGuiders answer-files, you probably never need to change any settings for the paging file. (But you can, if you REALLY want!)

And if your computer has performance problems, then start by ADDING MORE RAM, and then reinstall the computer correctly (e.g. Via WinGuider's guides), Also check if any software needs to be upgraded due to memory leakage, etc.

If your computer has a small amount of RAM, such as 4Gb etc., then it is best to stop using memory-intensive web-browsers (such as Chrome and Firefox), and instead use the built-in EDGE. And make sure to have fewer tabs and fewer programs running at the same time.

Well that was most of the “about Windows paging file”!

AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE FALSE MYTHS (UNTRUTHS) SPREAD ABOUT THE WINDOWS PAGEFILE THAN THERE HAVE BEEN TRUTHS SPREAD ABOUT IT!

Since WinGuider has been continuously educated in WINDOWS, Windows technology and Windows security since 1996, WinGuider has the deep expertise required not to be fooled by these false myths.

AND NO! Your computer's performance is NOT made better by installing different: optimizers, tuneup, cleaners, etc. These only give you a placebo effect. You THINK your computer will be faster, but you are only fooling yourselves.

And often that kind of program is the CAUSE of your unexplained blue screens, error messages and slowdowns etc..

Microsoft has worked hard to optimize memory management, file system, performance, security, etc. So all the benefits that these softwares promise, Microsoft has already built into Windows.. If any similar software would have worked, they would already been a part of Windows, and they are not! Are they?

The only program you need to “clran” your harddrive to get more free space is already built into Windows. Namely, DISK CLEANUP! If you choose "clean up system files", it will remove saved installation packages from Windows update (stored in case you would need to uninstall an update), as well as the frequently requested one: the Windows.OLD folder.  The easiest way to get rid of Windows.old folder is via Disk Cleanup!

THE TRUTH ABOUT WINDOWS PAGE-FILE!

Here WinGuider gives lots of advice about Windows, its handling, its functions and at the same time we take the opportunity to expose various incorrect MYTHS about Windows.

The tips are e.g. About how to easily create MORE SECURE passwords that are at easy to remember (which is important) and easy to enter (at least as important), (A method that you SHOULD teach to your children so they do not have to be "hacked" thanks to too simple passwords).

Of course, tips are included on how to protect your computer better, how to easily share files with each other in your home network, HOW TO DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 10/11 TO YOUR USB STICK before a new installation, etc.
